Vijaya Vilas: The Summer Palace of Maharao of Kutch

Just a 20-minute drive (about 9 kilometres) from the pristine shores of White Sands Bay, nestled amidst emerald greenery, lies the majestic Vijaya Vilas Palace, the summer palace of Maharao of Kutch. My 3-night stay at White Sands Bay included a visit to this historical gem, making it a highlight of the second day. Accompanied by fellow travellers (the kindest souls who even surprised me with delicious Kutchhi Dabeli on the way!), and guided by our friendly guide, we embarked on our palace adventure. As we passed through the charming town, anticipation simmered until we finally entered the estate. Towering trees formed a verdant canopy, whispering promises of the architectural marvel that awaited us within. Stepping onto the sprawling grounds, we knew we were about to explore the grandeur of Vijaya Vilas.

Vijaya Vilas

Beyond a lush garden, just a five-minute stroll away, a majestic architectural gem emerges, ready to captivate any visitor at first glance. Standing proudly on the Mandvi beach in Kutch, Gujarat, the Vijay Vilas Palace boasts a rich history. Built between 1920 and 1929, during the reign of Maharao Shri Khengarji III, the Maharao of Kachchh, it served as a summer retreat for the heir to the throne, Yuvraj Shri Vijayaraji. The palace owes its name to this beloved prince, a testament to the royal family’s lineage.

Nestled within the palace grounds lies a touching tribute – the Chhatri of Vijayaraji, the beloved prince who gave the palace its name. Sadly, he passed away in 1948, leaving behind this architectural legacy. For those seeking a unique seaside stay, Vijaya Vilas offers luxurious air-conditioned tented accommodation right on its private beach, promising an unforgettable experience. Interestingly, the royal family of Kachchh State, who once used the palace solely as a summer retreat, now reside here permanently, adding a touch of history and heritage to the estate.

Vijaya Vilas Palace Mandvi

Crafted from red sandstone, Vijay Vilas Palace embodies the essence of Rajput architecture. Drawing inspiration from the palaces of Orchha and Datia, it boasts a majestic central dome perched atop soaring pillars, flanked by graceful Bengal domes. Sunlight pours through intricate coloured glass windows, casting kaleidoscopic patterns on the intricately carved “jalis” – delicate stone latticework screens. Domed bastions stand sentinel at each corner, framing an inviting extended porch. Every inch of the palace, from its grand façade to the exquisite stone carvings, is a testament to the artistry of its era.

A symphony of craftsmanship unfolds on the palace walls. Intricate jalis, delicate jharokas, and graceful chhatris adorn the facade, each stroke etched by skilled hands from Jaipur, Rajasthan, Bengal, and Saurashtra. Local Mistris and Suthars of Kachchh added their unique flourishes, resulting in a mesmerizing blend of regional styles. This harmonious fusion is evident in the intricate murals, exquisite stone carvings, and vibrant stained glass adorning the windows and doors. Perched atop the palace, a panoramic vista awaits. Step onto the balcony and let your gaze sweep across the surrounding landscape. Lush greenery stretches out, meeting the horizon where the sparkling sea shimmers. The cool sea breeze whispers through the tiny, intricate windows, offering a sense of openness and connection with the elements.

Its imposing facade, a captivating blend of Indian and European influences, features exquisite stonework that captures the eye from afar. Beyond the palace walls lies a unique treasure – a private beach nestled within the estate, beckoning visitors with its pristine sands and tranquil atmosphere. The Palace also houses a museum.

Step back in time at the beachside tented resort offered by the erstwhile princely family. Within the palace estate, this unique accommodation evokes the feel of a royal guest camp.
