A Drop In Office Attendance Yet A Rise In Mumbai Traffic

Mumbai observed a rise in traffic as 30% offices reopened on Wednesday and inter-city travel was relaxed under the unlock 4.0 phase of Covid-19 lockdown. Police officials revealed that a larger number of people rounded up on the streets on Wednesday as contrasted to the preceding week. The Additional Commissioner of Traffic Police, Pravin Padwal, told media, “We did not take any action against motorists on Wednesday as it was the first day of the new unlock guidelines. We have decided to observe the movement of traffic rather. He added, motorists, are allowed only to take their vehicles to shops within their neighbourhoods and for valid reasons.”

On Thursday, new procedures for disposing of traffic employees would be determined on the base of the rise in a traffic jam and the areas with risen vehicular movement. In the meantime, transports continued to remain passive on both the Eastern and the Western Express Highways on Wednesday. Until Tuesday, about 3000 motorists were booked by the Mumbai Police for riding without a substantial ground during the imposed lockdown. Though, only a single case was registered, on Tuesday, which was the final day of the Ganesh Chaturthi.

As “Mission Begin Again,” rolled out, Maharashtra government has approved each private office to engage up to 30% employees with remaining staying to work from home. Many offices in the business districts have primped themselves, for an additional number of employees, while others have chosen to wait and watch. With this new relaxation in place, the Maharashtra government has also approved hotels to operate at 100% capacity.

The president of Hotel and Restaurant Association, Gurbaxish Singh Kohli, said, “The ease of restriction to allow more functioning at full capacity is welcome. With restrictions lifted from intra-district travel within the state, we are hopeful that there will be more customers now. Many hotels have, however, continued to remain shut, while anticipating air travel to reopen.”
