Umi Uma Teppanyaki: Experience Iron Plate Table Culture

As Genting Dream prepared to embark on its voyage across the sparkling, azure waters of the Singapore Strait, I was ready to put my chopstick mastery to the ultimate test. I had an 8 p.m. reservation at Umi Uma Teppanyaki, Dream Cruise’s renowned Japanese restaurant renowned for its theatrical iron table culture. After longing to witness a skilled chef’s dexterous food crafting in person, I was finally going to get my chance! Sure, it’s a delight to observe the suave culinary showmanship of a TV chef, but there’s truly nothing quite like being there in person.

Dining with Celebs at Umi Uma

Dining at this renowned restaurant was a truly unforgettable experience – not only was I able to savour the tantalizing flavours in person, but we got to show off our incredible memories to the rest of the world through our pictures and videos. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we’ll cherish forever! Umi Uma, the Japanese flagship restaurant on Deck 8 of the Genting Dream, is the perfect mix of luxury and fun! Enjoy a truly spectacular dining experience with their three distinct culinary themes: classic LIVE culinary display over Iron Plate tables, Umami, and Harmony.

Umi Uma Ginger Bars

This is no mere meal; it’s an experience that encapsulates the importance of togetherness and communal dining in the country of the rising sun. The first time I stepped into this impeccably dim-lit restaurant, it gave off the impression of a box chamber. As I came inside, I saw the bright interiors, one side of which faced the beautiful blue ocean. Anak Jajan, Jewels Zee, and Amber Chia were among the established travel influencers who were having dinner with me at the iron table where I sat.

We were delighted to be invited aboard Dream Cruise and to meet new people while savouring classic Japanese cuisine! Our eyes were immediately drawn to the Teppanyaki tables, which boasted a classic appeal that was charmingly contrasted by the modern ceilings. The restaurant was further distinguished by its crimson cushioned seats, porcelain ginger jars, rising sun paintings, and white porcelain dishes with delicate curves – truly a feast for the senses!

Umi Uma Veg Delight

At the Umi Uma Teppanyaki, you can get your fill of epic eats! Not only will you find the Umi Uma Sushi Bar and Korean BBQ, but you can also experience the unique cooking method of teppanyaki. But what is teppanyaki exactly? Well, “Teppan” refers to the metal plate used to cook the dish, while “Yaki” stands for the broiling, grilling, and pan-frying that makes it so delicious. Get ready for an unforgettable feast!

You’re then introduced to the Filipino Chef, who won’t begin cooking your dinner until you’ve shared your food sensitivities with him. Deliciousness awaits! The chef received the go-ahead from all of the table guests, signalling the start of the night’s most highly-anticipated show. Ready to be impressed by his quirky culinary abilities, I took a sip of my Guinness – an Irish dry strong beer – and uttered a cheeky “Greetings from Japan!” As I watched the skit unfold, my amusement only grew.

Umi Uma Jumbo Shrimps

The onboard gastronomic bliss was complete with artful food creations, chef performances, and a few rounds of Japanese craft beer. For dinner, I splurged on the most expensive item on the menu – the Dream Ocean Shinto – which featured a fanciful mix of sea scallops and giant shrimp. I was stunned by the incredible array of offerings – from a velvety, dark Beamish stout, with a hint of spice, to delectable grilled fish. But if you want to treat yourself, you gotta try the scrumptious Dream Ocean scallops and shrimp – you won’t regret it!
