Tiqri Taj Santacruz: Best Sunday Brunch Spot in Mumbai

Brunch is one of my favourite things to do on weekends! More so since a brunch combines the pleasures of two meals, namely breakfast and lunch, and allows me to choose from a wide variety of classic and unusual cuisine. In Mumbai, Tiqri effortlessly revives my dining experiences thus, I was ecstatic to be invited to review Taj Hotels’ gastronomic heaven. Tiqri is a phenomenal restaurant inside the Taj Santacruz, steeped in the pleasures of a bygone Rajasthani art form. Tiqri elevates modern eating by playing traditional beats in the background, with a 60-foot tall and 40-foot wide “Tree of Life” spiked with 4,000 shards of broken glass.

But don’t be fooled by the interiors just yet; Tiqri’s kitchen serves up a wonderful medley of flavours you won’t be able to resist. Tiqri, in addition to serving a wide selection of Indian and continental foods, allows for pleasant chats in the natural light. Depending on what time of day you arrive, you may see a starry sky or a starry night. What makes Tiqri’s dining experience wholesome is the stunning ambience, delectable food, and encomium of famous Taj cocktails!

Tiqri’s delicious Sunday brunch is far from rushed! So I invited Sujata, a blogger and journalist, to join me for lunch. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were immediately brought to a table in the centre, bathed in natural light. The surrounds which are adorned with exquisite starburst chandeliers exude a soothing vibe. These chandeliers sway in blue and green hues throughout the evening.

The accent lighting highlighting the Tiqri art form created a dramatic impact on the room during the daylight illumination. This loop reaches an ever open ceiling, displaying every aspect of Taj culture. Our gastronomic adventure began with several rounds of Taj Santacruz Strawberry drinks. Following this, a variety of Indian and Western appetisers were served. I fell deeper into the warmth of the orange club recliner with each bite, and I believe this is what comfort food is all about. It relaxes you while also taking your taste buds on a recess.

Furthermore, I was situated in a position from where I could see the sun tick-tock on the Tiqri wall, producing incredible reflections across the infinite “Tree of Life.” The inexorable aromas of the buffet lunch spilt across the open courtyard at that point, beckoning us to unlatch the delights encased behind those sizzling bronze cloches. This sumptuous Sunday brunch was nothing short of a gourmet oasis. The waitstaff was kind enough to bring me a few items from their ongoing Maharashtrian festival, which gave my generally continental selections a twist of flavour.

Succulent Kothimbir Vadi (Coriander Fritters) and coconut-y chicken Sukka with Bhakri, a type of bread, were among the highlights of Taj’s Maharashtrian culinary festival. I tried stir-fried king prawns, chicken dumplings, and a bowl of mushroom soup with authentic Chinese flavours from the Asian specialities menu. The yoghurt battered Chicken Tandoori Lollipop, coated with subtle Indian spices, was my personal favourite. The mushroom Pate stuffed with Cheever mousse and crispy almonds, the Roasted Pumpkin, berry yoghurt, Confit lamb, and my all-time favourite, the Chicken terrine, were among my favourites from the brunch buffet.

Swiss Rolls Tiqri

The mustard Bengali fish curry, Wok-Tossed shellfish, Cranberry rubbed drumsticks, and Raan-E-Shaandaar were the standouts from the main course. I just didn’t know what to skip when it came to desserts! Everything looked great and tasted much better, from the artistically pleasing Swiss rolls to the macarons and mousses.

Espresso Tiqri

The fantastic dining experience came to a close with a quick conversation with Deepika Sinha, our host and Taj Santacruz’s head of public relations. Deepika and I were having a chat over a double shot of espresso when she proceeded to tell me about the making of Tiqri. I would have spent more time enjoying Tiqri’s eternal grace if time had not been a constraint and I didn’t have to fly to another city in a few hours. On my next visit, I intend to do stay here longer. A Sunday brunch at Tiqri is a must-do if you enjoy exquisite food and peaceful settings as much as I do. Bon Appetite!
