Exploring Singapore: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Singapore is a world-class icon that takes your breath away with its soaring skyscrapers and pleasant parks. Bursting with the world’s finest museums, Michelin starred restaurants, and vibrant neighbourhoods, Singapore, is an island city-state that has limitless potential for exploration. This city’s beauty extends far beyond the extraordinary skyline to include Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa, Merlion, Botanic Gardens, Chinatown, Universal Studio and other must-see sites that each have their own unique allure. Flanked by grand buildings, this global financial hub also houses an 18th-century cricket field that serves as a reminder of its colonial past. Let the adventure begin!

My first trip to Singapore, just before Christmas, was a festive affair. From the well-decorated airport to the pleasant drive to the Marina Bay Cruise Center, Singapore is a city-state that bursts with energy and unique identity. From the majestic Buddha Tooth Relic Temple with its 18 Corinthian columns, to stunning nature trails amidst modernity, Singapore is the ideal destination for solo travellers seeking a positive, inspiring and radical change. And, of course, it’s one of the safest cities around!

From exploring Singapore’s iconic attractions to indulging in its diverse cuisine, the Republic of Singapore offers a foodie paradise like no other. With its Michelin-starred restaurants and hawker-style stalls, it’s impossible to resist the temptation of the tantalizing array of Chinese, Indonesian, and Malaysian flavors. My first meal in the city was the 328 Katong Laksa, a Michelin-restaurant that made headlines in 2013 when their Chef(s) beat Gordon Ramsay in a hawker style food competition. Naturally, I had to order their award-winning dish: a generous bowl of Large Laksa, featuring a rich coconut curry loaded with noodles, mussels, and fish.

Another lip-smacking dish I tasted here was Nesi Lamak, a Malay speciality. This one is an aromatic fish and rice dish, cooked in coconut milk, and served on a pandan leaf. The meal costed about $25 for two dishes, a cold beverage and a fresh creamy Thai Coconut.

Next, I decided to duck inside a mall to spoil myself to high-street brands, fashion houses, and discount outlets. For less expensive boutiques, venture out to local neighbourhoods and markets. One interesting aspect of shopping in Singapore is that you will find plenty of unique art galleries here selling Persian carpets and Chinese medicine. Travelling is easy, as well. You may either choose the wide network of cabs or take the world’s most efficient public transport. While riding a cab, keep an offline map ready for directions as your cab driver may not necessarily communicate in English.

Singapore has endless sightseeing opportunities for the adventurous traveler! Start your exploration with a visit to the temples of Chinatown, then take a ride on the Singapore Flyer – the world’s largest Ferris Wheel – for a spectacular view of Marina Bay Sands. And make sure you don’t miss the night time show at the famed Gardens by the Bay. When you’re ready for some fun, spend a whole day at Universal Studios! Or you can always visit the other attractions such as Madame Tussauds, Pandan and Botanic Gardens, Underwater World, and Tree Top Walk. Your Singaporean adventure awaits!
